For example: the
American Maritime History Project
The American Maritime History Project is a New York-based
foundation dedicated to increasing public awareness of the
history and contributions of the U.S. merchant marine.
In 2002, the AMHP hired us to write a full-length history
of the United States Merchant Marine
Academy at Kings Point, New York. We
conducted several dozen interviews and conducted
research at in archives at Kings Point, Hyde Park,
Washington D.C., and elsewhere. We then wrote a text
that not only recounted the institutional history of the
USMMA, but also placed the merchant marine in a larger
context: both in history and in the current-day setting
of Norfolk, Virginia. The book was published in 2007 by
Wiley.
In the course of this project, the AMHP came to think of us
as versatile problem-solvers. This led them to retain us to
write a second book, commemorating the Kings Point cadets
who were killed in action during World War II.
In addition, it led the AMHP to think opportunistically
when President George W. Bush agreed to speak at the Kings
Point commencement exercises in June 2006. The AMHP
commissioned us to produce a brochure documenting that
visit. We assembled a team of great creative
resources—including the graphic designers at
Emtype, photographer Michael
Lutch, and Kirkwood Printing—and created a 16-page piece
that the AMHP distributed to multiple constituencies.
This led, in turn, to the creation of a family of
publications describing various aspects of the unique
educational experience at Kings Point.
We enjoy working with clients over time, and applying our
growing institutional knowledge to multiple projects.
