A rare
opportunity
Today, Boston University School
of Medicine has a rare opportunity. We ask for the help of
our extended community—our alumni, the parents of current
and former students, and other friends of the School—as we
pursue that opportunity.
Our students need a place to live while they pursue their
medical degrees. That residential option has to be safe and
affordable. It needs to be family-friendly, since some of
our students have young children. It should be within
walking distance of the Medical Campus, so that our
students can spend less time on late-night and
early-morning commutes, and more on studying.
Today, a
solution is in sight. The University has acquired a
parcel of land at 817 Albany Street, only two blocks down
Albany Street from Boston Medical Center (where our
students do their clinical rotations), across the street
from the Crosstown Office complex, and behind the 801
Albany Street laboratory.
In addition, the University has pledged a substantial
percentage of the funds needed to construct a 104-unit
Medical Campus student residence on that site.
We have all of the necessary plans and drawings. Once our
financing is in place, we can go through our last round of
regulatory reviews—and then we can break ground.
The School of Medicine needs to raise a total of $10
million in support of this new facility. We have pledges in
hand for more than $2 million. A generous benefactor has
issued a one-to-two challenge grant: For every two dollars
we raise toward the new building, that donor will
contribute one dollar.
In other words, we are only about $5 million away from
transforming the lives of our students—and in the process,
making Boston University School of Medicine an even more
compelling option for tomorrow’s best medical students.
We
invite you to help us close that gap, and seize this unique
opportunity.
